Our history

In 1737 Cornelis van Lanschot laid the foundations for what was to become today’s listed banking firm, making Van Lanschot the oldest independent bank in the Netherlands. In 1819, Van Lanschot even minted its own coin, best known as the ‘Lanschotje’. Read on for more about nine generations of Van Lanschot bankers and our rich history reaching back 275 years.

Art and Van Lanschot

At Van Lanschot, we feel that art is a natural part of positioning our bank and brand. Our art collection has decorated our offices since we were founded, and paintings, drawings and other artworks make our reception areas and our own offices special and attractive places to work. Supporting art, artists and museums is one way that we as a bank can contribute to the preservation and creation of our cultural heritage. And so art is in our DNA. A rich tradition since 1737.

Van Lanschot and sponsorship

Van Lanschot Bankiers has collected art since the day it was founded, but its art collection didn’t really take shape until the 19th century, when art lovers Godfried van Lanschot and his wife made key purchases that form the core of our collection to this day.

More about sponsorship

And so, we’re very proud of our sponsorship of the Van Gogh Museum since 2015.
